CrossVocab is an AI-powered crossword generator designed specifically for English language learners. How It Works
Our AI uses OpenAI's GPT-5-mini model with structured outputs to generate vocabulary words that precisely match your chosen CEFR level (A1 through C2) and topic. The words are then arranged into a crossword grid using an intelligent layout algorithm that maximizes intersections for a satisfying solving experience.
CEFR Levels Explained
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is the international standard for language ability. CrossVocab generates vocabulary at each level:
- A1 (Beginner) — Top 500 most common English words
- A2 (Elementary) — Top 1,500 words, slightly more specific
- B1 (Intermediate) — More abstract, longer, less frequent vocabulary
- B2 (Upper Intermediate) — Academic, specialized, nuanced words
- C1 (Advanced) — Formal, idiomatic, less common register
- C2 (Proficiency) — Rare, literary, technical vocabulary

CrossVocab's print feature creates clean, professional worksheets perfect for classroom use. The grid prints on page 1 with cell numbers, and clues print on page 2 in two columns. There is even a Name and Date line at the top for student worksheets.
